We've had some brilliant weather, sunny and hot, even escaping the rain that was forecast so it's made me very happy, I hate the winter and the cold grey days. Some rain would be nice at night times though, it would save watering the tomatoes and make the grass green again.
The big barrel barbecue we had in the garden gave up the ghost over the winder and finally rusted through, it's been a good buy but it was patched up quite a lot last year and it was beyond repair so we went shopping for a new one last week. It was quite hard to find any traditional charcoal models, most are gas and I don't see the point of them, we may as well just cook in the kitchen. We finally found a good one at Homebase, the lid doubles up as a second grill, ideal for our beach parties. It's done well so far, we've used it three times in the past week and cooked some lovely food, including vegetables in a holey wok thing. My favourite is chicken breast cut into thick strips and wrapped in streaky bacon then skewered.
I managed to get down to the beach for my first swim of the year, the outdoor pool is lovely but I much prefer the sea, bobbing along in the waves and it's much warmer down here than Bamburgh, it's cold but not numbingly so. I can put up with the stones instead of white sand in exchange for the warmth. There was a regatta taking place so I watched the boats tacking to get around the markers in between reading my book.
The garden is looking ship shape now, with all of the hedges and climbers cut right back, everything power washed and the table re-stained, it would be lovely to sit out there but at the moment we have swarms of horrid little black hard shelled flies and storm flies, they are so itchy and uncomfortable. We have a blackbird's nest in one of the hedges with four babies, luckily we saw them before they were 'trimmed'! They are fascinating to watch as both parents gather grubs to feed them, mostly Dad does the work while Mum sits on the nest (good for her) but I don't think she's skiving, she's probably trying to hide her ugly babies.
I've been sewing some more, I wanted a beach cover up like Boden sell for kids but I couldn't even find a pattern to make one so I tried my own design. I bought some beach towels at Asda for £2 each, I actually bought three but I made so many mistakes I could have probably made it from just two. I used a baggy t shirt as a pattern, I am quite pleased with the result but I would make the next one longer and the hood bigger so that it comes all around the neckline. I have two red towels waiting for version 2.
I altered more trousers into shorts and made a top to match
Miss Amelia came to visit, she's six months old now. I tried to make her some shoes but I haven't managed to get them right yet, I may have to invest in a pattern, I can't work out how to attach the soles without a ridge. Towelling is too thick in double width and I'm not even sure they will stay on, I need to wait for our next visit to try them on her
My last project was a cover for a mug to make into a little caddy, I had thought about making them to sell but it took ages and I'm not sure they are worth the time and effort for what I could charge for them.
The rest of my time has been spent catching up with accounts, paperwork and trying to shop with no money or debit card, somebody managed to get my card details from somewhere and paid bills with it, including a mobile phone bill for £445!! How stupid is that? They can be traced easily. So now I have a blocked account, no debit card, they paid over and above my overdraft limit so they can't order me a new card until it's in credit and not a bean in cash. Hopefully they can sort it out soon and they have said that they will refund all of the charges. I just wish I knew how they got my details, I don't think the police even bother investigating. At least I'm saving money - I can't buy anything!
